Volkswagen Tayron Life vs R-Line

Tayron Life vs R-Line share the same 204PS engine and 4Motion AWD. See what the extra ₹5 lakh adds and which version suits your needs. The Life costs ₹5 lakh less while retaining the same 2.0-litre TSI engine, 7-speed DSG gearbox and 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. The R-Line uses that premium to add a third row, a 360-degree camera and a more complete technology package. The difference is about more than two additional seats. It reflects two distinct approaches to family use, with a five-seat SUV on one side and a seven-seat model offering greater passenger flexibility on the other.

The Same Engine and All-Wheel-Drive System

Both the Tayron Life and R-Line use the same 2.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine, producing 204PS and 320Nm, paired with a 7-speed DSG gearbox and Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. That means choosing the Life does not require accepting less power, a simpler transmission or front-wheel drive. It retains much of the same mechanical appeal as the more expensive R-Line.

What Does the Extra ₹5 Lakh Buy?

The biggest difference is the seating layout. The R-Line has seven seats, while the Life is limited to five. For families that regularly travel with more than five people, the third row alone may justify the upgrade.

The remaining differences mainly affect convenience and presentation:

  • Parking assistance: The R-Line gets a 360-degree camera, which is particularly useful on an SUV of this size in narrow parking spaces. The Life makes do without it.
  • Head-up display: The R-Line projects selected driving information into the driver’s line of sight, while the Life does not offer this feature.
  • Wheels and styling: The Life uses 18-inch alloy wheels with restrained chrome and silver detailing. The R-Line gets 19-inch wheels, gloss-black trim and more visible R-Line design elements.
  • Ambient lighting: The Life offers 10 colours, while the R-Line increases the selection to 30. This changes the cabin atmosphere more than the everyday usability of the car.

Despite these differences, both versions retain a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof and three-zone climate control. More importantly, they also come with nine airbags, Level 2 ADAS and an electronic differential lock. Overall, the main differences between the two versions are concentrated in seating capacity, convenience features and styling details.

Tayron Life vs R-Line: Which Version Makes More Sense?

The R-Line is the more suitable choice when the third row will be used regularly. Beyond its more flexible seven-seat layout, it adds a 360-degree camera and head-up display, making parking in tight spaces and longer journeys more convenient. Its 19-inch wheels and fuller R-Line treatment also give the exterior and cabin a more distinctive character. Even buyers who only need the third row occasionally may find the upgrade worthwhile if they prefer a more complete equipment package.

By contrast, the Life makes more sense if most journeys involve no more than four or five occupants. It retains the same engine, DSG gearbox, all-wheel-drive system and most key safety equipment while lowering the purchase price substantially. The lack of a 360-degree camera reduces parking convenience in tighter spaces, but the Life still offers a compelling combination of a lower price and the same core mechanical package for buyers who do not need a third row.
